A message from the Editor-in-Chief introducing this issue and its scholarly contributions.

NEP 2020 lays great emphasis on holistic development of students through multidisciplinary and holistic education, meaning to develop social, physical, intellectual, emotional, and moral capacities of human beings in an integrated manner.

Such multidisciplinary and holistic education requires the purpose of education to be redefined. Accordingly, the NEP 2020 says that the purpose of the education system is to develop good human beings capable of rational thought and action, possessing compassion and empathy, courage and resilience, scientific temper and creative imagination, with sound ethical moorings and values.

Fulfilling this all-encompassing purpose demands rethinking the content, delivery methods, teaching-learning process, theory versus practical, assessment and evaluation and other educational processes. The policy further emphasizes that higher education must develop well-rounded and creative individuals who build character, ethical values, intellectual curiosity, scientific temper, creativity, spirit of service, and twenty-first century capabilities.

Building character, ethical and constitutional values together with community engagement are central to the Bahá’í Academy's programme of Education in Universal Human Values. The National Education Policy also recommends credit-based courses in community engagement, environmental education and value-based education.

Such a holistic curriculum can transform students and teachers alike. This issue of THE COMPASS includes research on the long-term impact of Universal Human Values training on NSS volunteers, opportunities to prevent tertiary education dropouts, and an exclusive interview with Prof. Ram G. Takwale on education for personal development and societal progress.
